Artist Feature: Crystal Waters

Known for her soulful and sultry vocal performances, singer-songwriter Crystal Waters has been a major force in Dance music for almost a quarter of a century.

Crystal rose to prominence in 1991 with the worldwide smash "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)". It topped the Billboard Dance Club Play chart and peaked #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is one of her signature songs and it went on to be covered, remixed, and remade regularly. T.I. most notably sampled the Gospel piano loop in his song "Why You Wanna." It was one of the earliest pure House songs to do so well in the mainstream. The song cemented its place in the pop culture lexicon when it was parodied on In Living Color. Following the success of the lead single, her debut album Surprise was released. Subsequent singles including "Makin' Happy" and the LP's title cut performed only modestly well.

Her critically acclaimed followup Storyteller spawned another massive hit, "100% Pure Love." It too topped the Club Play chart and peaked at #11 on the Hot 100. That is her second signature hit. The other singles from the album "What I Need" and "Relax" also topped the Club Play chart.

In 1996, she collaborated with red hot producer/remixer/DJ David Morales on a new version of his underground hit "In De Ghetto" (under the name Bad Yard Club). It peaked at #20 on the Club Play chart. "Say... If You Feel Alright" and "Just A Freak" (with flamboyant basketball player Dennis Rodman) peaked at #6 and #13 respectively.

Crystal made a triumphant comeback in 2001 with the club hit "Come On Down" which sampled the main theme from the game show The Price Is Right.  The followup "My Time" was also a hit. Nearly 3 years later, her track with Alex Gaudino, "Destination Unknown" was a moderate hit on Dance radio, though it finally broke out when it was remixed as "Destination Calabria", a mashup with the oft-sampled song, finally becoming the international hit it was meant to be.

In the years that followed, Crystal performed on productions for Speakerbox, Bellani & Spada, Fred Pellichero, Yolanda B Cool, Nicola Fasano, and Steve Forest. Her current single "Oh Mama Hey" with Chris Cox (formerly of Thunderuss) and DJ Frankie just topped the Club Play chart.

And that is just the beginning as Crystal is busy working on a number of new tracks with Dave Aude, David Conner, David Tort, DJ Pasha, Gregor Salto, Stonebridge, Todd Terry, and Who Do Funk. Most of these should be released between the Spring and Summer months. One of the upcoming songs is called "Troublin", and based on the preview, it sounds like another big hit in the making. She will also be touring and performing in the coming months.
